Please join us in welcoming Mr. Kirt Broedel as Waterville Central School District’s assistant principal.


Broedel, a proud Waterville alumnus who started his new position March 10, brings 15 years as an experienced educator and administrator with a passion for student achievement. Most recently, Mr. Broedel served as an assistant principal at Proctor High School in Utica. His background also includes teaching English Language Arts, Academic Intervention Services, Reading, Public Speaking, Regents Prep and Literature in Film at Vernon Verona Sherrill High School.

“I am very excited to be here and I am looking forward to working with the teachers and students,” said Broedel. 

Broedel earned his Bachelor of Science Degree at St. Lawrence University and completed his Master of Science Degree in special education at Utica College. He also received a Certificate of School Leadership and Supervision from Canisius College.

“We welcome Kirt Broedel back to his roots as our assistant principal,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Spring. “His expertise, dedication to student success, and commitment to our school community make him an asset to achieving our district’s priorities.”  

Q&A with Broedel

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in education, and what led you to become assistant principal?

A: “Growing up, my high school teachers inspired me, and I gravitated toward being a teacher because of their dedication and ability to connect with students. During COVID, my wife influenced me to pursue administration, which has given me the opportunity to have a greater impact on school culture and community.” 

Q: How would you describe your leadership style, and how do you involve teachers and parents in decision making?

A: “I like to focus on leaning into people’s strengths and working collaboratively, as it takes everyone to move the needle. Empowering others ignites their passion and leads to success.”

Q: What initiatives or programs are you most excited about? 

A: “I am excited to collaborate with Principal Andre Paradis and contribute to the school’s strategic vision.” 

Q: How do you foster a safe and positive school environment for students and staff? 

A: “Building positive rapport and strong relationships between teachers and students fosters an inclusive and supportive school community.”

Q:  What are your top priorities for the school this year? 

A:  “Understanding where we are as a district and looking for different ways to provide students and teachers with opportunities to be successful.”

Q:  What do you enjoy outside of work?

A: “I enjoy spending time with my family and my three little ones, as well as traveling together. We look forward to visiting Florida each year.” 

Q:  Who was a mentor or role model in your life, and how did they influence you?

A: “Mike Ryan, an English teacher, along with the entire English department, was highly influential in my decision to pursue a career in education. As were my athletic coaches, like Mike Green.” 

Q: Do you have a favorite school memory from your own childhood?

A:  “Spending time with my classmates and teammates, playing sports, and being part of a strong school community.”

Q: Is there a particular subject or topic you’re especially passionate about?

A: “My love for English and reading, along with my experience as a literacy teacher at VVS, led me into administration, where I felt I could contribute to a more holistic vision for education.” 

Q:  Being a fellow alumnus, what advice would you offer to current students looking to succeed in school? 

A: “Take advantage of opportunities, meet new people, and try new things.
