Please join us in welcoming Mr. Andre Paradis as Waterville Jr./Sr. High School’s new principal

Please join us in welcoming Mr. Andre Paradis as Waterville Jr./Sr. High School’s new principal, starting Feb. 24.

With over 29 years of experience in education, Paradis brings both energy and a strong commitment to student success. He has served in various leadership roles, including principal of Proctor High School in Utica, and principal at Perry Junior High School in New Hartford. He served at New Hartford for 25 years. While there, he also served as the teacher association’s union president and the department chair for science along with teaching AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science and other science courses. Paradis is also a New York State Master Teacher and a Nationally Board Certified Teacher.

“I’m committed to creating an environment where everyone feels valued and supported,” said Paradis. “A principal sets the tone of the entire building while a thermometer measures the temperature, a thermostat sets it. Similarly, a principal actively shapes and guides the school environment.”

“We are excited to welcome Mr. Paradis as the new leader of the Jr./Sr. High School,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Spring. “His leadership and enthusiasm are evident, and we are confident the Jr./Sr. High School will thrive under his guidance.”

Q&A with Paradis

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in education, and what led you to become principal?

A:  “I was interested in teaching at the college level and began coaching at my alma mater, Nottingham High School. I enjoyed working with high school students and decided to become a teacher. Much later in my career, I became a principal, as it allowed me to expand my scope of work with teachers and have a greater impact on students.”

Q: What are your top priorities for Waterville Jr./Sr. High School this year?

A: “Understanding the culture, creating opportunities for staff and students, fostering a safe environment, and getting students across the stage at graduation. A Portrait of a Graduate is currently the New York State Board of Regents initiative that could lead to many changes to secondary students. A priority for me will be overseeing the full transition to the new graduation requirements, developing innovative instructional programs, and ensuring a smooth implementation.”

Q: What do you enjoy outside of work?

A: “I enjoy coaching swimming because it allows me to work with students of all ages throughout the Mohawk Valley. I also enjoy spending time with my six children, who are now young adults with the youngest one graduating this year.”

Q: Who was a mentor or role model in your life, and how did they influence you?

A: “During my time at New Hartford Central School District, Principal Vince Condro provided me with many opportunities, allowing me to develop leadership skills and gain experience in kindergarten through twelfth grade education. Assistant Superintendent Dan Gilligan genuinely cared about others and supported my professional growth.”

Q:  What is a book or movie that has had a big impact on you?

A: “A book that has had a significant impact on me is ‘All Learning is Social and Emotional: Helping Students Develop Essential Skills for the Classroom and Beyond.’ It highlights the importance of creating a culture where students thrive when they have a trusted adult – someone they feel connected to, value, and who believes in them.”

Q: Do you have a favorite school memory from your own childhood?

A: “A favorite memory of mine is my math teacher, Mr. Bisson. He genuinely cared about his students, recognizing their efforts and always highlighting the positive things they did.”

Q: Is there a particular subject or topic you’re especially passionate about?

A: “The ability to read and write across all areas of curriculum is essential. When I was younger, I struggled with reading, but as an adult, I have come to appreciate the value of both reading and writing.”
