Vote on mascot name to take place May 16

The community vote on the mascot name for the Waterville Central School District will take place on May 16, 2023.

A link to vote will populate on the district website and be available from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The link will only be accessible through the district website.

Those who come to Waterville Jr./Sr. High School, 381 Madison Street, to vote for the annual school district budget can place a vote in person between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Only one vote per person will be allowed. Duplicate votes from the same person will not be counted.

The district received nearly 100 name options and the list was narrowed down by a committee and students. The four choices will be listed in alphabetical order: Eagles, Huskies, Wildcats and Wolves

The name with the most votes will be selected as the new mascot name for the school district.

The change is coming after the New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) notification to school districts in November 2022 that they must ensure their mascots, team names and logos are non-discriminatory and specifically mentioned ending the use of Native American mascots and imagery.

The result of the vote will be shared on the district website, on ParentSquare and with local media outlets.

Community members who do not have students active in WCSD, but would still like to receive district notifications, are invited to sign up for ParentSquare, the district’s primary platform for school communication.

More information about the mascot, logo and team name change is available on the Waterville district website.
